Nakedness

Nakedness: a symbol of many different things. Through history it has been seen differently, on the Greek society it represented perfectness, that afterwards the same though was reborn during the renaissance. In orthodox and conservative societies it represents, beauty, although one not to share, only when married your couple had the honor of admiring that beauty.
Through the bible nakedness is recurrent, Adam and Eve, Abraham, Noel, ect. All of these characters have been chosen by God for something special, which makes them highly important. Therefore these people appearing naked are a strong symbol. David, the “hero” of the people of Israel, as well appear unconverted, “How glorious was the King of Israel today, who uncovered himself to day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one vain fellow shamelessly uncovered himself!”-Sam.2.6.20. God brought humans uncovered; this is a symbol of purity, of cleanness. Exempting Noel`s nakedness, the rest represent purity, they represent the prototype of a good human, a god`s messenger.
It very interesting that David (when he is king of Israel, on Samuel 2) wasn’t so of a prototype, he committed adultery, assassination, within other violations of the Ten Commandments; he is never punished by God. Although while a person touched the Arch of the Lord and was instantly pulverized.

Judging Harshly

Humans tend to judge harshly. Every one of us may call it differently, but we either judge or categorize each other by their appearance. A first impression may be important, although believing that through a person’s appearance we may decide who he is or how he should be. Terrible wars have happen by the fact that people either generalize a conduct or ideology to a group of people, or consider somebody something by their look. Some may consider these actions as fascist; I share that point of view. We shall mimic Gods decision of, "the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart." -Sam. 1 16.7.
During many wars nationals have to serve their country. The ideology for which they are fighting is irrelevant when choosing who goes to war. I read a autobiography of Nicolas Mosley “Time At War” were he describes all of his experiences in the second world war (he is British), although you can resume the book with a phrase: “The war wasn’t necessary, the only ones who were going win something, were the Americans and Russians.” We will never know if those who fought next to Saul and David against the Philistines shared the idea for which they fought (God in this case).

DNC Acceptance Speach

Ms. Obama is definitely a great orator. His tone and presence are incredible; Barack distributed equally his speech with the various types of rhetoric. The first twenty minutes were used between forensic and demonstrative rhetoric, and the remaining was completely occupied with deliberative .
During the first half the democrat nominee applied allot of ethos, acknowledging McCain’s service to the nation, although criticizing his decisions in congress:
“Now let there be no doubt. The Republican nominee, John McCain, has worn the uniform of our country with bravery and distinction, and for that we owe him our gratitude and respect. And next week, we'll also hear about those occasions when he's broken with his party as evidence that he can deliver the change that we need.But the record's clear: John McCain has voted with George Bush ninety percent of the time. Senator McCain likes to talk about judgment, but really, what does it say about your judgment when you think George Bush has been right more than ninety percent of the time? I don't know about you, but I'm not ready to take a ten percent chance on change.”
During the middle of the speech Obama constantly applied logos. Although there is something to make it clear, democrats and Barack understand his policies as logical ones. When speaking of this topic the democrat used a tone as if he was saying was very logical. How his proposals were viable and positive, and Ms. McCain’s were a simple continuance of George W Bush policies, were invaded with logos:
“Senator McCain… said that the fundamentals of the economy are strong. And when one of his chief advisors - the man who wrote his economic plan - was talking about the anxiety Americans are feeling, he said that we were just suffering from a "mental recession," and that we've become, and I quote, "a nation of whiners."A nation of whiners? Tell that to the proud auto workers at a Michigan plant who, after they found out it was closing, kept showing up every day and working as hard as ever, because they knew there were people who counted on the brakes that they made. Tell that to the military families who shoulder their burdens silently as they watch their loved ones leave for their third or fourth or fifth tour of duty. These are not whiners. They work hard and give back and keep going without complaint. These are the Americans that I know.Now, I don't believe that Senator McCain doesn't care what's going on in the lives of Americans. I just think he doesn't know. Why else would he define middle-class as someone making under five million dollars a year? How else could he propose hundreds of billions in tax breaks for big corporations and oil companies but not one penny of tax relief to more than one hundred million Americans? How else could he offer a health care plan that would actually tax people's benefits, or an education plan that would do nothing to help families pay for college, or a plan that would privatize Social Security and gamble your retirement?It's not because John McCain doesn't care. It's because John McCain doesn't get it.”
There wasn’t presence pathos in the debate.

Human’s And God’s Jealousy

Jealousy is one of the strongest feelings and individual may feel. When you are under its effect you are mad, sad and frustrated. Although a weak and manageable one (very difficult kind of jealousy to experience) may be a positive feeling. When you desire something which another person has, you are challenged and motivated to acquire it. My grandfather always told me “if you want something, work hard for it, and I promise you will achieve your goal” although my grandfather was “paisa”, (which firmly believe that by working hard they will achieve whatever they want; and that’s probably why Antioquia is the richest and most productive region of Colombia) he was giving me a very important message for life.
God experienced this feeling, he felt jealous of the amount of worshipers that admire false idols, "Thou shalt not bow thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me." (Ex. 20.5) I interpret gods “jealousy” as a feeling of protection of humans. He isn’t actually “jealous” of other idols (that don’t exist) but worried that people believe in them. They are ignorant of the holy power, one whose followers are safe and prosperous, thanks to the LORDS protection.

Gods Justice: The Perfect Excuse

Believers are supposed to follow the commandments preached by Jesus. When something happens its attributed to gods will and judge, “And Moses said unto the people, Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the LORD brought you out from this place: there shall no leavened bread be eaten.” –Exo.13 Line.3. The bad on earth will be judged in heaven. The honest (very difficult to be on earth) will be rewarded in the afterlife. Everyone grows thinking that the fallacies made in earth, if are not judged on earth will be in heaven. All of us are relieved by the fact, although none of us can prove it correct.
God’s justice will be present, but during life his will is in charge. Priests and rabies preach that everything on earth is caused by the holy power: success, failure, death, and life. What molesters me, is the fact that we humans attribute everything to the LORD; we create our own destiny!

Rhetoric In Presidential Debate

The third presidential debate was rich in deliberative and demonstrative rhetoric. The questions made to the candidates, were based on their proposes (which logically will involve lots of deliberative). The only part of the debate were forensic rhetoric was used was when both candidates attacked each other, of their voting statistics in the senate.
The use of rhetoric:

Forensic rhetoric: Sen. Obama accusing his opponent on “being a vigorous supported of President Bush”

Demonstrative rhetoric: Sen. McCain speaking of his negative adds to Ms. Obama.

Deliberative rhetoric: when both senators were presenting and arguing of their environmental policy.

Perseverance

Perseverance is the most important aspect when achieving goals. God asked Moses to liberate the Hebrew people enslaved in Egypt, “Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.” –Exo. 10 verse 10. He was given several proves, he had been selected for the task by god. The prophet had Hebrew origins and was later saved by the daughter of a pharaoh, from which he later escaped. LORD appeared several times to the individual in various forms. He was ordered to present a series of arguments and threats to the pharaoh. The Egyptian king refused the arguments and accepted the consequences he had been advised before. The rod stick becoming into a serpent, the river becoming blood, and the different plagues were indented to hearken the monarchs´ heart, which all failed.
For one to achieve something he must perseverate, all the people who are successful have had to persist in all situations. In countries were employment and education are not developed people had to be persistent so they can feed their children. Every morning a low-class worker has do wake up a the crack of dawn, eat whatever he can afford and head to his job, where he will probably spend lots of hours for a average salary. The people suffering of incurable disease that fight with whatever they can to maintain the hope. It’s that kind people who will finally accomplish something. That will make the step from good to excellent.
Moses holds a very important quality that will permit the liberation of Hebrews. All the plagues, all the argument and all the prove will become something big in the following chapters of the book (book=bible). Every hero has a special quality that not all hold, the prophet holds perseverance.

Religion: Number One Priority

The bible proposes morals which some Catholics base their life on. The Ten Commandments promote a life style. A very important point stated of Genesis 18-24 is the idea of being loyal to the LORD, if so you will be blessed. Killing a loved one is crazy; although if we were to follow Gods´ teachings, we would have to obey to which ever order he gave us:
“Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.” Gen.22 verse 2-3.
LORD GOD will protect good, and destroy evil. Humans are supposed to follow him so we can be “fruitful” as said, “And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.” –Gen.17 verse 6. The concept of salvation (western religions) is selfish itself, Abraham was selfish. How could we kill our own son? Being saved is a lonely path, were all humans are in the jungle, Hobs theory “the man is a wolf to man.”

Brothers

The bible is the most influential text in the history of humanity. Over 2000 years after its scripture people still use it, and call it the sacred book by which their ethic is based on. Through history the Catholic Church and the different elite societies have added and erased parts of it. Which can make it very dangerous to society; itself, religions are dangerous. The first chapters of Genesis contain a very important content which people can interpret differently (one of the big problems of the bible). The issues spoken of recall the beginning of existence.
At the beginning we spoke the same language; we had the same culture, “And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.” –Gen. 11 verse 1. all of us have the same ancestors, all of us are brothers. Although we have a disastrous brotherhood, all we have done is kill each other and destroy earth. People argue of holy wars, others, of ideology but at the end we are all the same, humans, brothers. Why do Americans have to kill innocent Iraqis or vice versa, aren’t we all a big family? Rapists don’t rape their sisters, gangsters don’t kill there brothers, or neither I hate my mother. But, if we knew we were a family, rapists wouldn’t rape, gangsters wouldn’t kill and I wouldn’t hate.
If some base their morals on the bible, why do we have poverty? If the church is supposed to be the representation of god on earth, why doesn’t it intervene in the fallacies made everywhere? As the three musketeers would say “all for one and one for all.” Earth isn’t a logical or fair place.

Why Do We Believe?

Myths explain or describe a natural phenomenon, that we cant find a scientific explanation to (at least at the moment the myth was created). On the myth of Echo and Narcissus it explains how echo was created and hoe does it work. Some time these “stories” were considered a religion, which people had faith in.When I was reading Genesis I could make some connections between the bible and the myths. Adam and Eve reproduced and had children and so on with their children. Some years later god acknowledge the great mistake he had done by creating humans, “And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually”- Genesis Ch. 6, verse 5. All though, there was a man who hadn’t been infected by the violence and corruption of earth, Noah. He was a normal person which was called to build and great arch by god. All the species (male & female) had to be aboard this ship for a period of 40 days, were god would make a flood in which everything but all aboard would die. After the great flood Noah spoke to god, and god promised never again to kill al humans, the symbol of this promise was the rainbow, “And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.” –Genesis, verse 11&12. Absurd enough the bible explains a phenomenon (the rainbow this case), as myths also do.It’s incredible to think that today millions of people have faith on religion such as Catholicism, which explains phenomena as the myths do. All though, there are no remaining believers in this dogma, which is thought absurd. People haven’t realized that this set of believes have many similarities.

England was at these times, “competing claims of religion and state, obedience to the pope or to the king, loyalty to god or nation.” (Nicolson, Pg 173) the virus had infected the whole kingdom, James solution was to reunite the whole community by attacking its basis, the different religious believes, “relationship to god through scripture, against a meditated, elaborated and socialized approach through an ancient church, guided by tradition.” (Nicolson, Pp 180) The people, who would summarize and unite the ideas into an impartial and clarifying text, were needed.On conversations people argue over a topic were their opinions vary, which is legit. In King James case, the opinions were the same, there was simply confusion, it was the same idea in other words. The existing translations of the manuscripts had the same meaning but they had a different “literal translation”, “Every translation, however good, was bound to contain errors and so by definition could not be used.” (Nicolson, Pp 181) People´s capacity and education limited their understanding, and imposed an only possible solution, (which there was) which had to be in their words.Experience and maturity may be an advantage, when discussing over your and other people ideas. The Concepts Of Self Preservation And Deliberate Faith In A Religion

The concept of self preservation and deliberate faith in a religion are especially big in humans. Since the crusades, to the middle ages and the present terrorist attacks in 2001, these feelings have been present. The war in Iraq relies on self-preservation of the American state, and the recent attacks done by the dogmatic Muslims rely in their faith. It’s highly difficult to not touch the religious topic (which I have in past blogs).The western states (most of them) are based in an organization were self-preservation and tolerance are the bases for their democracies. Countries as the United Sates, England, France and Italy contain a big percentage of immigrants; which makes them with a big diversity and cultural diffusion. Cities as London, New York, Miami and Rome contain large communities of immigrants, even neighborhoods, such as China town, little Italy or little Havana. The different religions that these cities host are innumerable; for there to be a proper organization there has to be tolerance. In these countries there is no such absolute religion (as there is in the Middle East) which create this “war martyrs” fighting for a sacred war, implored by god. Although that doesn’t exempts the concept of self-preservation (which in this case the hole world has) being another pillar, and even being a priority over tolerance. The extremes of the so called “self-preservation or self-defense” become simple survival. And as the US did invading Iraq, King James did on the Catholics.Tolerance isn’t so present in the east (especially In the Middle East) were the organization of states isn’t based on and ideology but in a religion. The so called Muslim states, are build on the 5 pillars, which may create this “deliberate faith”. That may become on terrorist attacks against the king of England or the civil populations of the United States.In the Middle Ages and renaissance (although most of the world was under the irresponsible Catholic Church reign, there were some exceptions) the “deliberate faith” was present in every house, with no exceptions of social classes. The Catholics had a direct rival the Anglican church of England. As the Muslims who crushed those planes to the twin towers, the Catholics tried to blow up the parliament.On the Jacobean England seems that the concept of self-preservation is prior to the religious diversity, and their faiths, “Errors of faith could be tolerated as long as they didn’t threaten the order of the kingdom. The idea of blowing up the parliament, needless to say, stepped over the line.” (Nicolson, page 109) To defend the unity and the security of a state is quite clear. In England over 70 criminals were tortured a year in the 1600s, the tortures are described as tremendous. Even if the individual accused had no prove against him the monarchy would intake him to an “appropriate suffering”, sometimes killing, sometimes and torture. Garnet, a normal person was accused of burglar. They tortured him in a machine, were the person was tied to the corners of a “bed”, which they started to expand until the person confessed (most of the time people were innocent, they had nothing to confess) it expanded until the person was ripen. And England was supposed to be save then.

Spelling Exercise #1

In dealing with student on the high-school level-that is, the second, third, and forth year of high school we must bare in mind that to some degree they are at a difficult psychological stage, generally called adolescence. Students at this level are likely to be confused mentally, to be subject to involuntary distractions and romantic dreaminess. They are basically timid or self-conscious, they lack frankness and are usually very sensitive but hate to admit it. They are motivated either by great ambition, probably out of all proportion to their capabilities, or by extreme laziness caused by the fear of not succeeding or attaining their objectives. Fundamentally they want to be kept busy but they refuse to admit it. They are frequently the victims of earlier poor training, and this makes every effort doubly hard. They are usually wiling to work, but they hate to work without obtaining the results they think they should obtain. Their critical faculties are begining to develop and they are critical of their instructors and of the materials they are given to learn. They are begining to feel the pressure of tome; and although they seldom say so, they really want to be consulted and given opportunity t direct their own affairs, but they need considerable guidance.

I Wish To Be the King Of England

The English crown is the oldest monarchy that continues to exist today. Queen Elizabeth the second, has been the ruler for more than half a century ago; probably one of the longest reigns on the crown´s history. The British monarchs have always represented the elite European society and the power of the United Kingdom. The monarchy is passed from king to his successor at death, just as queen Elizabeth did to King James in the seventieth century.The change from being part of the nobility or the high social status to king must be incredible. The change should have been more radical than it is today in the seventieth century. The British crown at the time, was probably one of the richest the hole know world had. It competed with Spain and France for the control of the Americas and Africa. Until the moment, the decay of the British Empire hadn’t taken place, the US and parts of Canada were still under their rule, there was not such intention of independence.King James went from being the King of Scotland (the poorest empire in all Europe and insignificant compared to the British monarchy) to become the monarch of the United Kingdom as, “James was in bed, yet not at sleep, when he had learned that he had become king of England. He had been king of Scotland since he was a year old.” (Nicolson, pp 4)On the first months of his rules he made was simply astonished by the great amount of money he owned. The first year of his rule, he made a journey around his empire, as, “James left Edinburgh for a journey in his new kingdom. It lasted over a month, spreading on through the beautiful spring… nobility, gentleman, and chancers from north and south of the border accompanied him. It was a calcavade. Most rode on horses.” (Nicolson, pp 129) the extravagances are note as, “The wife of the French ambassador was carried to London in a chair of slings, eight porters hired for the task, four to carry four to relive.” (Nicolson, pp 12)The change that James had, was so fortunate to have, I dream of it. On the first months I would not leave Buckingham palace, I would spend all of my time between reading, and eating the best food the hole world can offer (obviously I would have to do some political job, and all other things that a British monarch has to do, I mean of the remaining time) God, I wish I could be the King of England!

Things Pass By But....

Everything is forgotten, humans, events, ect; even if it is the most important thing in the universe, that can change the world. There is a common phrase that says, “things pass by, but at the end you will stay alone” it’s definitely true. Authors and books are constantly forgotten, in your town library you may see books which haven’t been checked out since 15 years ago or even more. Last Monday I checked a book from my school library, the book hadn’t been opened since 1995, and it was a great book!The people who wrote The Making of King James Bible, are forgotten. The 50 men, who translated this text, are of history. The rights of author (it is the right of an author or its family, that for every sold book, he or the receive money) are expired and the people will remember their words but not there names.

Definitely... MISTAKES

Humans are not perfect; everybody make´s MISTAKES. Children have special qualities as well as unique mistakes; every age group has some, which differ from the others. There are very few MISTAKES that generation has.A QUEStion is based on human developments (which has some exclusive situations, were it doesn’t happen, such as a adult that never became a mature person, he keeps thinking as a child although he’s 40). How did we get here? Well, I guess that to get to anywhere we have to make MISTAKES.Children make lots of MISTAKES, (which is natural considering that they are how they are). Especially we, children, make mistakes that we have been previously warned of. Not only that, but when somebody warns us of not to do something, the first ting we think and do is actually that. Just as Psyche, when she was doing that last job for Venus, she was waned of opening a box, which contained beauty, even though she had to do this for her husband. (Another MISTAKE of humans arises in this part of the myth, which is we are always want more, we are not satisfied with what we are given.) “When Persephone has giving you the box filled with her beauty of all things this is chiefly to be observed by you, that you never once open or look nor allow you curiosity to pry onto the treasure of the beauty of the goddess.” (This was Venus speaking) “but having got so far successfully through her dangerous task, a longing desire seized her to examine the content of the box… So she carefully opened the box” (Bulfinch, page 91)Psyche opened the box and fainted, although she received help from the gods and could finish her job. In real life neither the gods nor anybody help you, you will simply have to accept the consequences. They may be a broken foot, or a expulsion from school, although unfortunately they sometimes can be death.

Just Equal

Although the human raze has achieved a level of development amazing, we are still pretty elemental (and have always been) on some subjects. There has always existed (on most of the civilizations, we know have existed) a type of discrimination. A discrimination where either black, women or any other ethnic group gets its rights violated (the concept of human rights dint exist three hundred years before, it is relatively modern) or taken into degradable conditions (in ancient civilizations). I wrote blog entries on how humans have never learned from their mistakes and on the human development (which right now seem very precarious in my opinion).Our society, system of government and organization are based in an invention of ancient Greece, in Athens. The democracy was a inventions in the fifth century before Christ (the first democracy was a representative one, not exactly the one we have, but based on it) where every Athenian citizen could participate in the assembly (what today would be the senate). Although they were some restrictions, it had to be a male (we can actually see machismo here) who was bigger than 21 years old, and there were some “restrictions” that the people have (what I mean by restriction under quotes is that they were not official but the people respected them) they should have studied and the most important was to have good rhetoric skills.Although we can see that the Athenian democracy was very advanced, it lacked of a very important aspect, which even today we lack but in less severe way. How all man (man meaning people) are the same, WE ARE ALL EQUAL, WOMEN, BLACK, MAN, WHITE ect. We can see on the story of Pandora how the roman mythology promotes machismo. Pandora, the first women made (men were made before women) opened a char which contained very serious emotions and feelings such as revenge and envy. She caused the whole world to be as it is. A desperate place, were the biggest unfairness’s are taking place. Jupiter afterwards had to kill every human a life to refresh the world, because the existing humans had all been invaded by everything that Pandora let out.

Sacrifice

Would you be able to give your life for a specific cause? This is a dilemma that humans have been chased by. Human deaths are innumerable in wars; people give their life for a “special” cause on this situation. Although most wars are unnecessary and horrible, some have to be fought; sometimes lives have to be given for what is correct.Does there really exist a legit cause to give up your life? As in roman mythology, they may exist. On the story of Andromeda and the Sea Monsters the brave and madly in love Perseus risk his life for his future bride. He fights a monster, (which in Roman and Greek mythology may be the most difficult and scariest thing to kill) which afterwards is killed in a very tough combat. “there will be time enough for tears; this hour is all we have for rescue… if she is rescued by my valor, I demand that she is my reward” (Bulfinch, page 125) followed by the combat were Persues is victorious.I do believe in living your life for something or someone you love. I understand the sacrifice the soldiers do, they risk there life for their country, I am a great patriot. I belief that some wars have to be fought. I would be able to sacrifice, for a cause I belief legit.

Untankfulness

All humans are unique; however a percentage shares some qualities. They may include irresponsibility, envy, not sharing and being unthankful. Few people stop their daily routines to think, and thank whatever they believe in or whoever they are supposed to. The disabled, poor, sick and many other types of people which suffer from very serious misfortunes, are true. Although, some privileged “suffer” of irrelevant and unlegit causes. The holy scriptures have repetition emphasizing how important it is to be thankful. Mythology isn’t exempt from this task. On the story of Cadmus, were he had received help and blessings from the gods (this is obvious, now that he was the king of a city thanks t to the willing of the gods, which told him how to do it) and later killed a sacred serpent and insulted them; he and his wife get turned into snakes. “A fatality hung over the family of Cadmus in consequence of his killing the serpent sacred to Mars. Semale and Ino, his daughters and Acteon and Pentheus, his grandchildren, all punished unhappily, and Cadmus and Harmonia quitted Thebas… -If a serpents life is so dear to the gods, I would I were myself a serpent. No sooner than he uttered the words… both became serpents. ” (Bulfinch, page 97 & 98.) The punishment may not be as extreme as is it today. People who are unthankful hit against a very hard wall, one which might hurt them allot.

The Origins Of The Theory Of Evolution

The theory of evolution is relatively new. It was formulated by Charles Darwin in the XIX a.c. although I have discovered some prove which would maybe change the origins of the theory. The roman mythology encounters lots of phenomenons with creative answers. Modern religions have done the same, although without the success that the roman and Greek mythology has had. The question of existence isn’t new, and as many other very important and highly philosophical questions, it is answered by the roman mythology.The roman mythology may be the origin of the theory. In The Myrmidons is says: “The tree stood before me in my dreams, with its numerous branches all covered with living, moving creatures. It seemed to shake its limbs and throw down over the ground a multitude of those industrious grain-gathering animals, which appeared to gain in size, and grow larger and larger, and by and by to stand erect, lay aside their superfluous legs and their black color, and finally to assume the human form.” (Bulfinch, page 101) The theory is very accurate and credible. This is enough prove for everybody to acknowledge the origins of the theory of our evolution don’t rely in Darwin. The Romans had knowledge that was lost, some may be of existence. The conclusions they dropped 2000 or more years ago, we are just formulating. Who knows how much knowledge humanity has lost since?

Injustice

On developing countries, a social class takes control of the society. They represent the power: economically, politically and other aspects. The rich take control of the poor and play with them, as if they were a reusable resource. The story of Perseus and Medusa represent this. How Perseus kills Medusa without looking in her eyes and having a protective shield. There won’t equal conditions on the assassination. Just as it is in society, a sense of equality and tolerance doesn’t exist.“All around the cavern where she dwelt might be seen the stony figures of men and animals which had chanced to catch a glimpse of her and had been petrified with the sight. Perseus, favored by Minerva and Mercury, the former of whom lent him her shield and the latter his winged shoes, approached Medusa while she slept, and taking care not to look directly at her, but guided by her image reflected in the bright shield which he bore, he cut off her head and gave it to Minerva” (Bulfinch, page 121)In Colombia the lower social status people suffer allot. They have to take insults, aggressions and several other unfair situations, which the constitution and international law are supposed to defend. Persues kills the terrible monster when she is asleep. He kills her with no fight and no equality conditions; it’s unfair, its and assassination. Medusa has no defense.Humans are supposed to learn from their mistakes. What was the slavery in southern United States, the apartheid, the civil war in Burundi, Darfur and other tragedies ? We haven’t learned the meaning of tolerance. The world is going one step further and two back. Poverty, pollution and many other global problems may be solved!

The Unhealthy Love

Have you ever loved something or somebody, but at the same time you are making them suffer or making yourself suffer? I speak with experience, I used to love tennis, although I applied to much stress, later I had to drop it, it wasn’t healthy. Or maybe when you love someone and you sacrifice allot for the relationship, you know that sacrificing yourself too much isn’t healthy. The story of Apollo and Hyacinthus represents, the unhealthy love.“Apollo was passionately fond of a youth named Hyacinthus. He accompanied him in his sports, carried the nets when he went fishing, led the dogs when he went to hunt, followed him in his excursions in the mountains, and neglected for him his lyre and his arrows. One day they played a game of quoits together, and Apollo, heaving aloft the discus, with strength mingled with skill, sent it high and far. Hyacinthus watched it as it flew, and excited with the sport ran forward to seize it, eager to make his throw, when the quoit bounded from the earth and struck him in the forehead. He fainted and fell.” (Bulfinch, page 70)There are two types of the unhealthy love:· You, damaging yourself.· You, damaging others.Both are present in everyone’s life. I want to emphasize an unhealthy love. The one society has, we don’t know if it’s a suicide or an assassination. Although it is killing us, we take one step more and two back. Some people have present the damage, they can make a change. We are killing:· Our environment: pollution, deforestation, ect.· The economy and the people: poverty, wars, corruption, ambition, ect· Other aspects such as peace, politics, and democracy.We are having a painful death. Humans should life with, and in the balance of nature. Let’s hope someday someone will have an earnest desire to save the world.

Religions And Mythology

Religions have been a branch of the tree of humans. As it grows, the branch grew as well. Although they are extinct believes. Although we continue to read, analyze and use those ancient faiths. The Greek and roman mythology are probably the biggest “religions” which have no followers even though they still survive. Why are these extinct? What are he differences and relationships with the faiths that host millions of people today?The biggest similarities are (the more relevant similarities to answer our questions):· The both have god/gods and they attribute the existence to those.· These god (s) are the creators of the world.· All the god (s) are “better” than humansThe biggest differences are (the more relevant differences to answer our questions):· Religions are more authoritarian of the divinity of there only god.· Mythology creates a direct relationship with humans although they don’t doubt of the divinity. (Humans are also the creators of some thongs; Phaeton son of Apollo, is the creator of the deserts, darked colored people and other stuff. The gods have human characteristics and have family which may be humans, such as Hercules is son of Zeus.)· Mythology describes a great percentage of some phenomenons. Religions lack of this. (In Romans myths they explain several things such as the echo)If you were to drop conclusions, you would point out that mythology is more believable or explanative than what religions are. Myths explain the echo, love ugliness, mountains, deserts, rivers, ext. Modern believes are too straight minded. Although, people have faith in the unbelievable, mystery, unexplanatory and very authoritarian. Myths lack of one aspect, humans need. Salvation, different from: “humans go to the underworld, were they live in the river and a skeleton passes you from a side of death to the other and charges a gold coin# (which is not nice to live in for the rest of eternity) they have no consequent or positive explanation of death and after it. Religions do, most of them are: you will live in the heaven (which is supposed to be an excellent place)but if you do bad on earth you will go to hell.

Hospitality

On ancient Rome the hospitality of the people was amusing, today it would impossible to do as are Italian predecessors did. The citizens left there houses open and permitted everybody to enter if, the people were of their or upper social status. The Mediterranean mythology emphasizes this.“Once on a time Jupiter, in human shape, visited this country, and with him his son Mercury, without his wings. They presented themselves, as weary travelers, at many a door, seeking rest and shelter, but found all closed, for it was late, and the inhospitable inhabitants would not rouse themselves to open to the reception” (Bulfinch, page 52) “We are gods. This inhospitable village shall pay the penalty from its impiety” (Bulfinch, page 52.) The first quote demonstrates how wrong the citizens did, totally disrespecting the tourists and breaking there tradition. Today if you see tourists looking for a place to sleep, you probably won’t wake up late and arrange a room so they can stay over the night for free. On the second quote the gods are cursing the city, afterwards they will make a flood and everybody will die. Although, the theme of the story isn’t how hospitable you should be, there is a deeper thought.On the story, the gods find a hospitable poor family, when Jupiter and Mercury show themselves as gods they reward the family with a great palace and a wish. The theme of the story is: you shall help others, if so, rewards will come.This is also a famous phrase of the Colombians. I remember my grandfather telling me that. My short life has proven few things, but one of them is that the theme of this story is true. The people who wrote the myth were very intelligent. I hope that one day all the citizens of this world would realize this. Everybody would help each other, there would be no war, no poverty, no suffering.

Critical And Funny But Interesting

The theme of a story is very important. Although the stories may sometimes laugh of the stupidity of the people, there themes are always to be recognized as excellent. In Bulfinch’s Mythology I read several stories in which they “laugh” of society but had an interesting theme. The story of Midas, Pyramus and Thisbe, and Dryope are some of this.The story of King Midas was one, that attracted me allot. A god grants one wish, to the king. His wish is that everything he touches becomes gold. He becomes very rich, but when he is going to drink water it becomes solid gold, and so on; which leaves the king starving to death. This story is very critical about our society. Through Midas, the author states that humans are very ambitions, inconsiderate and selfish. And as a result he ends dying of starvation. But the main theme is: beware of your decisions, and don’t be ambicious, it may kill you. This is actually a very intelligent message.All of these stories were right and very critical. In the story of Pyramus and Thisbe, were both lovers, suicide thinking either that the other is dead or that he is the cause for the others death. You can obviously see how it “laughs” and calls love stupid and blinding. Although all the stories are funny, I wish all the people who read them understand the underlined message and apply it.

The End: Gilgamesh Dead?

on the last tabletWhat is the netherworld? Gilgamesh asks Enkidu. The last tablet of the book is really weird. It seems that Gilgamesh dies. He is living with the gods and Enkidu on heaven. Accidentally he through a drum stick to the netherworld and Enkidu decides to go for it. Although he gets trapped. Gilgamesh, through the help of the gods frees his companion of the house of the dead. If Enkidu reapers this means that Gilgamesh dies. Both are dead. Which is actually an exelent ending for the book. On this chapter one of the questions of the course is answered, according to the epic. Where are we going? He spoke of all the spirits living in the netherworld, all humans. If we would die in the story we would go to the house of the dead, the netherworld.

Inmortality?

Tablets 8 and 9Immortality, the goal humans, have always wanted to achieve. In Greece, the citizens wanted to become gods, to be immortal; in the colonization, the Spaniards went crazy trying to find the fountain of life, which was an indigenous legend. The alquimists speak of sorcerer’s stone. As well as humans, Gilgamesh realizes he is vulnerable (I was wrong on the blog before, Enkidus death changes Gilgamesh by reminding him that he may die, as well as his companion) he will travel the wilderness to find an answer, for his question. May death be avoided?From now on the real message of the story will start to enfold. (I was wrong on the blog before, I said that Enkidu´s death was the climax of the story, it is actually a rising action. Which was the starting point of the second and most important pat of Gilgamesh) “Enkidu has died. Must I die too? Must Gilgamesh be like that? Gilgamesh fealt the fear in his belly. He said to himself that he would seek the son of Ubartutu, Utnapishtin, he, the only one of men by means of whom he might finding out how death could be avoided.” (Gilgamesh, page 42)Will humans finally find immortality? Well I guess that they have already found it. The immortals are the geniuses that worked for a better future, that even after being dead are always present in conferences, schools, and minds. The Colombian presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galan, assassinated by the mafia in 1989 is one of these immortals for me. Every time I think of a special person, I think of him. Or in a more general look Dr King, he is always being remembered for his fight against racism, he is a hero for many. I hope that every generation, more of this people are created, and at least one is not killed. He can make a big change.

Why Death?

Tablets 6 and 7
The Bull of Heaven, the second victim of the infinite power of the strongest, greatest and tallest living creature. Enkidu and Gilgamesh once again, fought together and killed their second enemy. Ishtar, a goddess falls in love with main character. She invited him to live with her, and become totally a god, an immortal. Although the greatest of all, rejects her and tells about her foulness. She was enraged, “Ishtar was enraged and went to the gods in heaven, to Anu her father and to her mother Antum. “The king of Uruk has insulted me. He has found out and told about my foulness.… give me the bull of heaven that I may punish Gilgamesh the king, who has found out and told about the foulness of the goddess” (Gilgamesh, page 32) And so it was. When Ishtar came back to the heaven and told all the gods about the killing of the Bull. They decided to punish Enkidu with a fatal sickness, which later he dies of.Gilgamesh suffers greatly the death. What does the death represent for the epic and Gilgamesh? I believe this was the climax and from now on, the falling action will take place. The book is starting to end. (It’s curious that the story starts the falling action on page30)I believe that the death of the companion is a message for the greatest of all; he is being reminded that he is still a human, gods have the ultimate power. He may not challenge this, they may kill him. But as well it’s an advice for stopping hid dangerous journeys, and return things how they were before. He is protected by the walls. I hope the death will have a big effect in the remaining of the book; therefore it will make the falling action more interesting.

The Fear to the Unknown

The unknown, a topic in which humans are unable clarify. The fear to the unknown is the biggest barrier humanity may have. Fear is a human quality. Gilgamesh the main character, which is two thirds god and one third human, as well experience this feeling. “This was the place Huwawa was; huwawa´s breath is death. Beautiful is the forest; green upon green the cedars; fragrant the air with the fragrance of cedar trees; the box that grew along the silent walks of the guardian demon, shadowed and still, utterly still, was fragrant. Then Gilgamesh was afraid, and Enkidu was afraid, and they entered into the forest, afraid.” (Gilgamesh, page 25, 26)I interpret the fear of Gilgamesh, as one to the unknown. What percentage of life is unknown? Philosophers, psychiatrists and religions have tried to answer, although none of them have created a believable answer. Are all humans scared of the unknown? Well at least Enkidu and Gilgamesh were. Gilgamesh was raised inside the great walls of Uruk. Coming outside, were he wasn’t protected, was challenging and scaring. He dint know, how it was out there. The god/human became vulnerable.I believe one hundred percent of the life is unknown. We think we know something; But it’s wrong. If it would be correct humanity wouldn’t be destroying itself and the world as it is. Every human being is fearful to the unknown, humans have a habit of believing they know everything, when control leaves there hands they simply panic.

Enkidu’s?

(Blog on tablets 1,2 and 3)Toda very few “uncivilized” communities live. Communities that are alienated from the society; just as Enkidu. “Shamhat took of her rope and divided it so that the wild man also could be clothed. When this was done and both of them were clothed, she took him by the hand as a goddess might, leading a worshiper into the temple precinct; as if he was a child she held his hand. And they began their journey. They came to the camp where shepherds lived, who gathered about and wondered at the huge size and strength of Enkidu, the hairy-bodied wild man of the grasslands. They said t o each other “he is like Gilgamesh, twice the size of an ordinary man. Stronger and taller than a battlement, he is like a star that has fallen from the heavens. They cooked and set it before him; they brought out beer that had browed and set it down. But Enkidu knew nothing about these things, so he sat and started at the cooked food and the beer for a very long time, not knowing what to do. The Shamhat, the harlot, the temple prostitute, said: Enkidu, this is the food and drink man eat and drink. Eat and drink your fill. So Enkidu ate his fill cooked food and drank the beer. Seven jugs of beer. Then he washed his hairy body, anointed himself with oil, and dressed his body in new cloths, so hat he looked as beautiful as a bridegroom.” (Gilgamesh page12-13)The past description of the adaptation of a “wild man” into a normal society may be as today it is for indigenous communities. Is the adaptation harsh for the one being adopted? In Colombia violence has abruptly created lots of these cases in the last decades. As result, a lot of knowledge is being lost; probably the most important on medicine, philosophy and even on how we ought to live. Culture is being lost; our history is being lost the basis of our civilization is being extinguished by ourselves. Sadly today special communities are being forced to become part of the society. Violence, technology and the simple argument of being unable to survive without living in our society is cause for this adaptation.
